Add Some Green!

Every now and again it is important to add some additional green to your diet. Yes, we need to make sure we load up on our veggies daily, however there are other important all natural greens that could give us the added benefits our bodies so greatly deserve.  What I am talking about are two of my fav’s, Spirulina & Wheatgrass. What are Spirulina & Wheatgrass? Well in one word..Nature :) Spirulina is actually an algae, and Wheatgrass a food prepared from the cotyledons of the common wheat plant. Both are extremely powerful for our health. The benefits are huge! Spirulina will improve your stamina and give you energy, the highest beta carotene food, strengthens the immune system, high in protein as well as essential fatty acids, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, assists in muscle building, weight loss……need I say more?? :) Oh and did I say it was an antioxidant? Remember those free radicals I often talk about? Spirulina will also help rid our bodies of those free radicals that cause terrible disease :( .  Wheatgrass is another one that gets BIG stars! Also loaded with antioxidants. Provides chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, & enzymes. It is believed to fight & prevent cancer, lower blood pressure, oxygenates the blood & organ tissue, & helps purify the liver ~ cleanses the body…..DETOX! :) AND it helps in giving us a better complexion  & can even slowdown the graying process! :) Oh and yes, it helps in weight control & provides us with enough energy to help us feel refreshed and ready for anything the day may bring!

Spirulina Smoothie

OK, so how do we add these greens into our lives?? What I do is I add them to my drinks. I add a tsp of Spirulina or Wheatgrass to my smoothies :)  Don’t let the color cloud your judgement! It may look different, but is taste just as yummy! When your ready to take the plunge & drink it alone, find yourself a juicer and enjoy the full benefits of a 2 oz shot of Wheatgrass! :)  AND don’t tell me you can’t have a shot of Wheatgrass after all the shots of Kamikaze or Jagermeister you’ve had in your lifetime! :) So there you have it….Spirulina & Wheatgrass! Come on, reap the benefits,  get adventurous, step out of your comfort zone, think outside the box, & JOIN the Journey!! Healthy living mi gente….that’s what its all about! :)

Its Spring….New Beginnings….New Opportunities….New Adventures!

Have a Great Geen Day!  Buen Dia! :)

“Run Forrest, Run…”

Wheather your running for your life like Charlie Brown, or jumping over hurdles like a cross country All-American, or running on wet sand like the ever so inspirational Olympic hope-fulls in Chariots of Fire, you are enjoying a sense of euphoria that is often called “runner’s high”. Its marathon season, track & field is in full swing,  and even though I don’t consider myself an avid runner, I do enjoy to run. 3k, 5k, or 10k they all give me that “high” that so many runners love to experience. Yes there are days, more often that not, that I dread going for that run, but what motivates me is remembering how I am going to feel afterwards. As it was so eloquently stated in a recent New York Times Magazine article, “pure happiness, elation, a feeling of unity with one’s self and/or nature, endless peacefulness,” “inner harmony”. That’s what I’m talking about! :) An incredible sense of euphoria that I will not trade for anything, AND when you realize that you are doing something GREAT for the figure…. priceless :)

Running is a great form of exercise that can be enjoyed by all, and that feeling that you get after shouldn’t be missed by any :) So since its an exercise that can be done anywhere, as long as you have a good pair of sneakers and an open area, I urge you all to go out there and hit the pavement, or stomp over your buddy “Tread”.  Start slow, run/walk if you are a beginner, and slowly work your way up. Before you know it a 10k will feel like a stroll in the park. Take it from me, I still can’t believe I can run for as long as  I can :)

Have a Fabulous Day! Buen Dia! Make the plan & stick to it! Stop the procrastination and make it happen….ahora! :)

Tune Up for The Bod!

That’s what I call it when I need a little enhancer to maintain my exterior :) and since my Bday is approaching I decided to start last Sunday with an overdue facial! :) Yes ladies, and men, its important that we take care of our outside as well as our insides. Although, the benefits of eating well reflects on your physique as well as hair and skin, a little tune up is nice and helps the mind in loads. Nothing like relaxing during a facial, message, mani, pedi, hair appointment etc. Unfortunately for us multi-tasking mom’s we often neglect this so important ritual. Not good! We need to take care of ourselves in order to be on top of our game….the extremely important game called LIFE! :) I know it gets pricey and many of us are on a budget so that is why their are ways we can get a “tune up” at home too. I recently re-discovered my forgotten buddy Honey Bear :) Honey Bear was hiding in the back of my pantry and noticed that when I wanted to add some to a nice hot cup of tea (I’m an occasional tea drinker). Truth is honey isn’t good just for tea, its fantastic as a moisturizer too! I suffer from extreme dryness on my hands and when coco butter alone wasn’t doing the trick I added a few drops of honey to my moisturizer and like magic my skin was soft and fab! A single ingredient, pure & natural resource that is great for cooking, as a cold remedy, natural sweetener, throat soother, skin & hair moisturizer, and for us health & fitness lovers a GREAT pre workout energy booster! AND it has one of the longest shelf lives for food products out there! One may think its gone bad when it crystallized but it has not. Just place the bottle in a pot of warming water and it’ll return back to its natural state. So honey, if you don’t have some at home be sure to pick yourself up a cute Honey Bear during your next trip to the market. And if you want to watch a great family movie that will shed a whole new light to honey watch one of my family’s fav’s Bee Movie. Got to love Barry Benson! :)

Have a Wonderful Weekend! Feliz fin de Semana! Get moving & Eat smart!  Dale! :)

Enery!

OK my male friends beware for a little TMI, although I think you should be able to handle it! :) When I ovulate, and thanks to my age its getting worse, I feel as if all my energy is literally being sucked out of me. This week/month was no exception. I am not the type of person who sleeps in or takes naps…never have. I’ve always been pumped and energized. So when my body demands a break I usually give it to myself in order to stay healthy. Its very important to listen to our bodies and since I do I have noticed the energy deficiency that arises when I ovulate, and I don’t like it!  This morning I woke on a mission because I was not going to let another month/ovulation cycle take over the me I’ve worked so hard on becoming. I eat well, take a multi, Flax oil pill, Young Livings Multi Greens & NingXia Red on a regular basis,  but recognize that there may be a supplement out there that can help me out during that time in the month that I need it the most, so I went to my ever so loyal google and searched. I found this helpful article courtesy of www.vitamins-nutrition.org.  For all of you seeking a little added vitamin energy boost enjoy the read. Hey it works for Madonna! :)

Vitamin B: The Energy Vitamin

Vitamin B: The Energy Vitamin
By: Dr. George Obikoya

The B-complex vitamins are actually a group of eight vitamins, which include thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folic acid (B9), cyanocobalamin (B12), pantothenic acid and biotin.

Many people consume foods fortified with vitamin B, but the typical American diet high in processed, cooked and microwavable food gives us only a fraction of the B-vitamins we need for good health. There are a number of ways to make up for this deficiency, but liquid multivitamins are generally considered to have the advantage over all other supplements.

The B vitamins are vital to a vigorous and energetic long life. What’s more, you can get serious health problems if you lack them. B vitamins are easily flushed out of the body, and people on weight-loss diets, alcoholics or those who take antibiotics or seizure drugs are even more prone to having vitamin B deficiency.

While it is safe for many people to take three times or more of the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for B-vitamins, each of us has unique requirements based on our own individual physiology and lifestyle. Hence, it is important to check with your doctor before beginning a vitamin regimen in order to determine your proper dosage. Because deficiencies usually include more than one B-vitamin, and because the B-vitamins work best as a team, you should take a B-complex supplement along with any single B-vitamin in order to achieve their synergistic effects.

B1-Thiamin: Thiamin is necessary for adrenal gland function, proper immune performance and the synthesis of neurotransmitters. It also plays a role in the metabolism of food and alcohol. The RDA for thiamin is very low and does not consider increased thiamin requirements that result from an unhealthy lifestyle, old age or disease. Seniors typically have lower thiamin levels and should be aware of symptoms such as poor memory, fatigue, muscle weakness and blindness, and in time even heart disease, brain damage or death. Because thiamin, in combination with alpha lipoic acid (ALA), encourages the nerves of the skin and the blood vessels to regenerate, people with diabetic neuropathies often feel relief from pain when they increase their thiamin intake along with ALA.

B2-Ribofiavin: Riboflavin is required for energy production and oxygen utilization. The symptoms of low riboflavin include fatigue, blindness, anemia and crusting around the mouth.

Doctors sometimes prescribe riboflavin to prevent migraine headaches and to alleviate arthritis pain. Recent research suggests that riboflavin may also play a role in the prevention of cancer.

B3-Niacin: is also necessary for the body’s production of energy. It is also useful in treating high cholesterol, schizophrenia, neurological disease and Raynaud’s syndrome (a blood vessel disorder).

If you intend to take high doses of niacin, you should use “flush free” niacin. Besides lowering LDL (low-density lipoprotein or “bad”) cholesterol, niacin, in combination with vitamin C, can reduce the body’s production of lipoprotein (a), a risk factor for heart disease. Let your physician monitor you if you are taking high doses of niacin.

B5-Pantothenic Acid: is obligatory for energy production. It is also required for proper immune function and adrenal stress hormone production. It is sometimes referred to as the “anti-stress” vitamin.

B6-Pyridoxine and Folic Acid: work together to regulate the levels of homocysteine, a byproduct of protein breakdown that damages arteries and makes them prone to cholesterol deposits.

Folic acid is especially important for women of childbearing age, as deficiencies of this nutrient have been linked with birth defects. Women on birth control pills, pregnant women, all women of childbearing age, as well as alcoholics, heart disease patients and people taking antibiotics should make sure they take between 400-800 mcg of folic acid per day.

B12-Cobalamin: is required for normal gene function, energy production, the formation of blood cells and proper immunity.

Choline and Inositol: Choline is necessary for building your cells and severe deficiency can cause death. Because of its anti-inflammatory nature, choline supplements of 1,000 mg are effective and safe for treating asthma and arthritis. Inositol deficiency can lead to severe mental problems. Hence, inositol helps in the treaent of depression, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, with a daily dose as high as 12-18 gm. It is also used to prevent hardening of the arteries, protect the heart and treat cancer. Two daily B-complex capsules should provide sufficient amounts of these two vitamins for most people.

Biotin and Paraminobenzoic acid (PABA): Biotin is required for fat and protein metabolism, effective immunity and gene function. Biotin deficiency is most common in the elderly, people with diabetes and in those who take too many antibiotics. PABA is necessary for the metabolism of amino acids and in the formation of blood. Biotin and PABA deficiencies are rare and people can usually get enough from a good B-complex supplement.

The B-complex vitamins receive less media attention than the other vitamins but as you can see from reading this article, they are fundamental for life. As such, a daily regimen to acquire all of them, such as a liquid multivitamin, is an excellent way to prevent the diseases and conditions described in this article. They work together as team members, which keep your body functioning normally and provide you with the energy you need to conduct your daily activities. Plus, B-complex vitamins can help prevent many diseases because they repair nucleic acids and immune cells.

A good multivitamin is the foundation of health and nutrition. Take a look at our scientific reviews of many of the popular brands for factors such as ingredients, areas of improvement, quality level, and overall value.
