Good Morning Fitbit!

There are fitness trackers and then there ARE fitness trackers. Lately I’ve had the pleasure of being greeted by someone other than my family every morning. “Hello Barbara, what’s up?” A smile comes across my face as my cool Fitbit one tracker greets me and provides that extra motivation I may need to get started on my healthy living routine. Yes, we all have them. After all I am human, and there are days (more than I care to admit ) when I need that extra umph to get me going.

The Fitbit one is the coolest fitness gadget I’ve come across in a long time. Basically its a wireless tracker that not only tracks your physical activity while you are up and on the go,  but also your sleep activity while you are resting. Ever wonder why your so tired after a full nights sleep? Well maybe its because you didn’t get enough actual rest, and spent most of the night tossing and turning. The Fitbit one monitors your sleep and will even wake you with a silent alarm.

All you have to do is clip it on during the day and adjust it to a wrist band at night before you go to bed. Its bluetooth capability will work its magic and wirelessly sync all your daily activity to your smartphone (iPhone & Android apps) and/or PC/MAC. Got to LOVE LOVE LOVE Wireless technology! :)

You can earn badges for reaching milestones, set goals, log meals, view progress such as calories burned vs. calories consumed, and share & compete with friends. There is so much you can do on the free Fitbit website and app! I assure you, you will fall in love with your new “friend” :)

Now what’s your excuse to not move? Whether its walking or running make healthy living a way of life! :)

Make it a great one & enjoy the journey!

Try This Tuesday!

I don’t want to hear it! We are all busy & tired, and at times don’t know where to start.  I get it.  I am with you. So before you start thinking of a reason why not to move and exercise, try this.  Right now….get up! Give me 20 squats.  Go back to doing what you were doing, wait a few minutes, and get up again….give me 20 more! Do this three times throughout the day. One more thing. Before you head to the bathroom in the morning and before you crawl into bed. STOP…hit the floor and give me 20 push-ups followed by a 30 second plank. Aim for three sets…if you absolutely can’t keep at it, try adding more tomorrow. Even 10 is better than nothing. Anything is better than nothing. Believe me the adrenalin boost is the BEST feeling in the world!!

Squats: Stand with legs shoulder width apart. Bend the legs at knees lowering your torso between your legs never letting knees pass your toes. Bring yourself back and repeat. Keep abs tight.

You can also do lunges…ANYWHERE!! Stand with feet shoulder width apart and hands on hips. Start by lunging right leg forward and dropping left to floor, without touching, in a 90 degree angle. Abs tight- bring legs up to standing position and repeat w/opposite leg.

Yes….I do Planks everyday & everywhere!  MY FAV! Press forearms and hands down on floor or bring up to push-up position. Don’t allow chest to touch the floor. Abs and body tight. Works the Core & total body.

Now….Get Moving! Make it Great! You are out of excuses!

Kick it!

Hola Friends…..I’m traveling on the Miami Media Tour this week, BUT that doesn’t mean I will not be moving & implementing fitness into my life.  Exercises that can be done anywhere is what I pride myself in. If I can get a run in great, but if I can’t then my jump rope and the floor in my hotel room will do. One that I do often to help with my Assets :) are the kickbacks. Kickbacks are the oldie but goodie exercise that will work our glutes. Do 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps three times a week.

There is NO excuse….Get moving & have fun! Be sure to follow me on twitter @BarbaraPorAtras to stay up to the minute where you can see me this week with Miel Pura & The National Honey Board! Telemundo, Radio, Print, CNN……Very Sweet indeed!! :)

Yummy Granola!

One of the many great things I’ve been doing since my collaboration with the National Honey Board is whipping up yummies in the kitchen! :)  My family has been loving every aroma and delish concoction I’ve been making! One of my fav’s is my healthy granola.  Granola is one of those great foods that are totally versatile. You can have it alone as a snack, on yogurt, with skim milk, even on ice cream. A great healthy treat for the whole family! However, like many things out there, some store bought granola are loaded with preservatives and added un-neccessary sugars. Precisely why my granola is so amazing! Its all natural with a touch of my fav ALL NATURAL sweetner~ Pure Honey! :) Oh, and did I mention its super easy & quick to make? Yes indeed….my kind of dishes. Quick, easy, and naturally delicious!  Buen aprovecho! :)

Healthy Granola~

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of Rolled Oats
  • 1 cup sliced Almonds
  • 1 cup raw Sunflower seeds
  • ¼ Flax seeds
  • 1/3 cup Canola Oil
  • ½ cup Honey
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp ground Cinnamon
  • ½ cup sweetened Dried cranberries

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F
  2. In a large bowl, stir oats, nuts, & sunflower seeds. In a separate bowl mix oil, honey, vanilla extract, & cinnamon.  Add to the oat, nut, & seed mixture and mix well.
  3. Spread mixture onto two ungreased baking sheets.
  4. Bake in oven for 10 minutes, remove & stir. Return to the oven and bake until granola mixture is golden brown. This should take about 10 more minutes.  Once golden remove from the oven and let cool completely.
  5. Once completely cooled mix in the sweetened dried cranberries.
  6. Serve & Enjoy!

While waiting for the granola to cook utilize that time to move! Take a look at my week 5 exercise tip  The Curtsey Lungs~ Desplante con genuflexion with the National Honey Board Miel Pura :)

To be an Athlete

What does it mean? Webster says an Athlete is: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.

I witnessed great athletes yesterday as I have for many years. These athletes, were pumped, excited, nervous. They have been training for months, some even years.

I watched as many ran with all their heart and gave it their all. I watched as some fell and instantly got right back up and kept on running. I watched as some didn’t know when to stop, and continued running :)

I watched parents cry & siblings cheer!! I watched cousins full of pride yelling, “GO!!! RUN!!! JUMP!!”

Yesterday I watched some of the bravest athletes surrounded by their greatest cheerleaders. “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This is the Special Olympics pledge.

In ancient Rome, the gladiators went into the arena with these words on their lips. A pledge that I believe is universal and one that we should all follow. One that we should all learn to instill in our lives, and learn from while watching these great athletes.

Yesterday,  I yelled and cheered for my nephew, my Andrew, our Athlete. He did great! He loved every minute of it and felt all the great pride & energy we were giving off which clearly showed! He came home with his medals and loved standing on the podium to receive them :)

Why wouldn’t he? He trained, he fought, he ran, he gave all he had, and won. But even if he didn’t he tried his best.

Last night when we got home I had a long conversation with my other favorite athlete. Max’s baseball team did not do well at yesterdays game. Actually not doing well is an understatement :(

I asked Max if he knew where he went wrong, if he had tried his best. He answered yes & no.

Webster defines Best as: excelling all others : most productive of good : offering or producing the greatest advantage, utility, or satisfaction. I think as an athlete and frankly in all you set out to do you need to dig deep and compete with yourself in order to be the best you can truly be.

Before we went to bed I told Max to remember what went wrong in his game and what he saw in the Special Olympics. “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Make today count! Be your TRUE Best in all you do! Make it a Great one & Get Moving! :)

Share…..By Kids 4 Kids

Enjoy today’s blog entry….BandBFit By Kids 4 Kids! :)

Hi everyone! :) Today I am going to give all the kids out there a quick tip!  Share :) Yes its true.  Sometimes we like to keep our things to ourselves and not share. But if it weren’t for my mom sharing her workout equipment Veronica & I wouldn’t be learning & enjoying all the different types of workouts mom is teaching us! The latest exercise that is helping me in my baseball game is using her 3lb medicine ball. You know the one we bought at Five Below :)  Yes, the medicine ball is helping me with my arm development, core, and focus. We toss it back and forth to each other and sometimes when I am alone I’ll toss it up towards the sky and catch it. We do 3 sets of 20…Mom tells me to keep my legs firm on the ground and just use my arms while keeping my belly tight. The belly is the core. Its fun doing different types of exercises that are great for me! AND thanks to my mom she lets me use her equipment….we share :)

Try it! I am sure it’ll help in your game :)  Get Moving, Eat Right, & Have Fun! Lets make OUR future a GREAT ONE!!

Peace & Love…..Max & Veronica :)

Señoritas de Nuestro Futuro

I had the pleasure & honor of being a speaker at the Senoritas de Nuestro Futuro event held by El Diario & Macys this past Saturday April 2, 2011.  For me it was more than just an event,  it was an opportunity to connect with young Latina’s, the future of our great nation. As the day began, I became more than just a speaker, I became a mentor, a role model to these young ladies who are so very much filled with the desire to make a difference. I spoke to them on the importance of healthy living. There was so much they did not know about the importance of proper nutrition & exercise. Breakfast was again the meal most of them missed! I’ve said it before and will say it again, a healthy breakfast is the most important meal of the day!! It IS the foundation for the rest of your day. You will not only fuel your body, you will also fuel your brain, and without brain power you will not succeed in the goals you set for yourself! Another topic that surprised me, but didn’t shock me, was the lack of schools providing a healthy lunch. No fresh fruits or vegetables are offered, and lunches are usually “frozen”. This sad & unnecessary lack of providing a proper nutritious lunch to our kids, takes them outside of the school to the fast food chains. Its hard to believe that our schools still can’t properly fuel our kids with the proper foods they need to succeed in school!  We spoke about body image and how a positive self body image will be the foundation they need to get on with accomplishing their dreams & goals. I shared with them my own personal struggles with weight & body image, and how although at times I still don’t like what I see in the mirror, I am conscience of what I am thinking and instantly  correct that thought & compliment myself.  Friends, it is so important that we toot our own horn and in the words of Rossana Rosario, CEO & Publisher of El Diario, keep your tiara always on and make sure no one knocks it down! :) We need to be our best cheerleaders!  The confidence that we need to instill in ourselves will carry us through all the peaks & valleys life will bring.  At the end of the day, I learned from the girls just as they learned from me. We established a wonderful  relationship, and as I told them, whatever I can do to help them on their way I will. We all need mentors and proper role modes in this world, and for me its a huge honor to be recognized as one. :)

Now a special message to my girls who are reading…desayuno! What did you eat today???   Did you read the label before you chose to eat it? Did you share the importance of living a healthy lifestyle with your mami, papi, tia, tio, abuela, abuelo, hermanito, hermanita?? And lastly…..put down that soda!!! :)

Have a beautiful day! Buen dia!! Muevanse & Get Moving!! :)

Besos y Abrazos….xoxo  ”…..Barbara por Atras, Barbara por Alante, y Siempre Barbara por Adentro!”

P.S attached below is the link to a story provided by El Diario on the event…Enjoy! :)
